What Is a Bullfrog Cocktail?
A bullfrog cocktail is an alcoholic mixed drink made of four types of spirits, a citrus liqueur, some lemon juice, and an energy drink. Indeed, one look at the list of the bullfrog drink ingredients could be enough to get some people drunk.
To say it packs a wallop is an understatement. Because of the four types of spirit it contains, each averaging at 40% alcohol by volume (ABV), the bullfrog cocktail’s alcohol percentage is around 12.45% ABV.
How did this drink come to be? There’s not much known about the bullfrog cocktail history. There are even conflicting accounts of what this cocktail is.
However, the particular bullfrog cocktail drink we describe in this post is believed to have originated in Dubai. It got its name from its turquoise blue color, one of the colors associated with bullfrogs. Perhaps it could also be a play on words, as Red Bull is one of its primary ingredients.
Regardless of the bullfrog cocktail’s origin, it’s a fact that this cocktail has enough power to kick start happy hour, so learn how to make it for your next party.
Bullfrog Cocktail Recipe
Are you ready to learn how to make a bullfrog cocktail? Prepare the following ingredients and equipment and follow these instructions.
Bullfrog Drink Ingredients: What Is a Bullfrog Cocktail Made of?
You need to prepare these ingredients:
- Gin, 1 ounce or 30 milliliters (you can buy gin online in Abu Dhabi)
- Rum, 1 oz or 30 ml (shop rum in Abu Dhabi)
- Tequila, 1 oz or 30 ml (check out your options for tequila in Abu Dhabi)
- Vodka, 1 oz or 30 ml (get vodka in Abu Dhabi)
- Blue curaçao, 1 oz or 30 ml (view your options for cocktail syrups liqueur in Abu Dhabi)
- Lemon juice, 1 oz or 30 mL
- Red Bull, 1 oz or 30 mL
- Ice
- Garnishes: a wedge of lemon and a cherry
You can increase or decrease the portions, depending on how many servings you wish to make. Just remember the 1:1 ratio of ingredients.
Note that some bullfrog cocktail variations do not use lemon juice. Others don’t measure the Red Bull. After pouring in all the other ingredients, some people add as little or as much Red Bull as they want to fill the glass to the top.
Bullfrog cocktail garnishes may also vary. A wedge of lemon and a single piece of cherry is standard, but some substitute lime or orange for lemon.
Cocktail-Making Equipment
You need Collins drinking glasses. You may also want to prepare a bar spoon, which you can buy wherever you get your bar tools.
Procedure
Making a bullfrog couldn’t be simpler.
- Fill a Collins glass with ice (up to the 75% mark).
- Pour the gin, rum, tequila, and vodka over the ice.
- Add the lemon juice, the blue curaçao and the Red Bull.
- Mix, garnish and serve.
The steps are so simple you can condense the steps above into one sentence: Mix the ingredients in a Collins glass, garnish and serve. The ease of making it is another thing that recommends the bullfrog cocktail for your next party.
Bullfrog-Making Tips
A cocktail is only as good as its component ingredients. If you want a superior drink, use high-quality ingredients. Use an excellent gin, rum, tequila and vodka. Use a good brand of blue curaçao.
You can forgo the lemon or dilute the drink with more ice if you want it less sour. If you want your drink sweeter and bubblier, you can add more Red Bull.
This is why you want to make your cocktail in a tall, big glass. It gives you more space to adjust the taste to your personal preference.
Is the Bullfrog Cocktail Strong?
We have mentioned this earlier, but we’ll gladly reiterate it. Yes, the bullfrog drink is strong.
Assuming you’re using gin, rum, tequila and vodka at 40% ABV each, the bullfrog mixture without ice should be around 23% ABV. That’s 48 ml alcohol content (12 ml for each of the spirits) for the 210-milliliter liquid (120 ml of spirits, 90 ml for the lemon juice, blue curaçao and Red Bull). After adding ice, the bullfrog drink alcohol percentage goes down to around 12.45%, which is still relatively high.

The bullfrog has enough alcohol to jumpstart a party. Consider it for your next happy hour.
